Wasaga Got JERK
As a West Indian, a Trinidadian to be exact, there are times that I feel we take our culture our food our homeland for granted. We welcome visitors to our Islands daily to experience Island life and all that it has to offer, which is an extraordinary thing. But at times it may take visitors to show us how simply amazing what we have truly is.
Fast forward to the present, we live in THE beach vacation destination of Ontario Canada, this destination boasts to be home of the world's longest freshwater lake/beach in the world, Wasaga Beach. No offense to anyone reading this, but Wasaga Beach is known to be many things it is predominantly a Caucasian town and there are very few people of color that live here so imagine my surprise when one day I'm driving along and I see a sign that says "Jerk It Up". WHAT, finally, something we can relate to!? Ooh happy day!
The island of Jamaica is synonymous with, and is THE birthplace of JERK. What is jerk? Jerk is a combination of herbs and spices that is used as a marinade, a basting, seasoning for meats and even vegetables, which is then cooked on an open flame, such as the pic below.
Today, June 1, 2019, I stopped to get a taste of JERK IT UP. A little background, the owners of Jerk It Up are actually of Jamaican parentage and live in Shelburne Ontario. I was able to take a few shots and finally taste, and IT IS ABSOLUTELY FRICKING DELICIOUS!!
There is the heat of jerk but not too much that toy cant taste the food itself. The menu isn't huge, or confusing. I ordered the Jerk Special, which is essentially one piece of chicken, peas and rice, and tour choice of salad, I opted for macaroni. Damn it, soooooo delicious!!!
